Step by step process

5 vs 5 Youth Developmental League (YDL)

The 5 vs 5 Youth Developmental League will focus on introducing children to the team-play aspect of the sport. Children will improve basketball skills, offensive and defensive strategies and comprehension of rules through team practice and games.

Season: Winter Season 2022-2023
Starts: January 21, 2023 (Saturday)
Ends: March 25, 2023 (Saturday)

Seasons are 10 weeks long:
The first two (2) weeks, players will go through a skill assessment clinic run by Breakaway Hoops coaches
The next four (4) weeks will focus on competitive games
The next two (2) weeks will be the playoff and championship week
The last two (2) weeks will focus on the post-season workout
This will be followed by the next Season.


OVERVIEW

  • Teams are grouped randomly according to age division ( 9-10, 11-12, 13-14).
  • Boys and girls ages 9-14 are eligible to participate in the league. Participants are placed on teams randomly upon registration. If you would like to be placed on a team with a teammate or sibling, text us at (646) 776-2021.
  • The league follows middle school-modified rules.
  • The first two (2) weeks, players will go through skills assessment (try-outs) run by coaches with collegiate experience. (1 hour total)
  • The next four (4) weeks will focus on competitive games (1 hour per game)
  • The next two (2) weeks will be the playoff and championship week. (1 hour per game)
  • The remaining two (2) weeks will focus on the post-season workout. (1 hour total)
  • Each team will have a maximum of 10 players per team.

PLEASE BE REMINDED:

  • The first two weeks of practice will be 1 hour per practice
  • Competitive games, playoffs, and championships are for 1 hour
  • Last two weeks of practice will be 1 hours per practice

GAME RULES

All other procedures, restrictions, and exceptions are explained below:

Clock
Games are played in 4 (10-MINUTE QUARTERS) with running time. Players are substituted every 10-minutes.

Time-outs
Each team will receive one (1) thirty-second (30) time-out each 10-minute quarter. If play is interrupted by an injury to a player or the loss of a contact lens, the referee may, in his discretion, stop the clock but in that event shall assess a time-out to the team responsible for the delay in play.

Overtime
In the event of a tie at the end of the 20 minutes, the first team to score will win the particular game. Possession is given to the opposite team of a jump ball.

Rosters
A team consist of a total of 10 players.

Mercy Rule
In respect to everyone involved, if there is a 20 point (or greater) margin with less than 2 minutes left in the game, the game will be stopped.

Fouls
Any flagrant (discretion of officials), unsportsmanlike foul shall result in a free throws, automatic ejection and loss of possession. A player disqualified as a result of unsportsmanlike conduct shall promptly leave the vicinity of the gymnasium. His failure to do so shall result in automatic forfeiture by his team, in addition to disciplinary against player and / or his team (at the discretion of the Commissioner).

The use of profanity, vulgarity, taunting and verbal abuse of players and officials will not be tolerated at Breakaway Hoops. Any such incidents will be penalized with a technical foul. Fighting will absolutely not be tolerated.

Any player who throws a punch in aggression on in defense will be ejected for the league for on (1) season, including playoffs. It will be the official(s) discretion to end the game if any player is in danger or teams are playing overly aggressive.

Dress Code
No jewelry is permitted to be worn during the game. Any jewelry which cannot be removed will be reviewed by the referee(s) and the referee(s) will decide if the player can play in the game.

Participants must wear Breakaway Hoops reversible jerseys. Any player not wearing official Breakaway Hoops jersey or appropriate matching and non-repeating number t-shirt at the opening tip-off will be issued a technical foul. The Commissioner can make an exception on a season-by season basis.

*Parents are required to have uniforms within the first 2 weeks of practice.

Championship Rules & Regulations: Standings are based on the number of total teams. All game rules during the regular season apply for playoffs.

Teams will be seeded by their overall regular season record. Tie-breakers are as follows:

  • Head-to-Head Record: Tie goes to the team who has won more H2H match-ups
  • Points scored
  • Points allowed (least)

*Breakaway Hoops has the right to add, delete or amend the rules and regulations at any time for the betterment of the program.

*Non basketball glasses are not to be worn at any point on the basketball court.*


PRICING

- One time Payment of $350 for 10 weeks
- Deferred Payment Plan: $40/Weekly equally $400 for 10 weeks (takes place after 2nd weekend of try-outs)

Free throw: 1 point

Field goal outside of 3-point arc: 3 points

Timeouts
  • Two 30-second timeouts permitted in the first half of play. Three 60-second timeouts permitted in the second half of play
  • Maximum of 2 timeouts permitted in the final 2 minutes of the fourth period
  • One 60-second timeout granted for each extra period.
  • Unused timeouts may not carry over to the next half or into extra periods.
